    Project Value

In early 2021 CAPE was awarded a contract comprising of two historic building upgrades to meet current seismic standards including general refurbishment and maintenance works.

Due to the historical significance of the two buildings, the project required an intimate relationship with the architect to ensure all works had been completed in accordance with the preservation of historical elements, this included closely working through quality assurance and the use of specialty subcontractors to ensure future use of the building.

The main work comprised of replacing high-level glazing from toughened to toughened-laminate glass which meant new glazing beads to the curved section and careful rebating of the historic Kauri timber lantern windows. Structural upgrade to the frame included the addition of steel bracing and brackets welded to existing steel. Other refurbishment works included plastering, brickwork remedials, paving repairs, concrete repairs, replacement of the cast iron rainwater heads, lead and copper flashings and replacement of drain lines damaged by adjacent tree roots.

Further works added to scope included a refurbishment of the water feature pond, cool house display cabinets and a new lighting design to the fernery.

The work environment was in a sensitive area with plenty of public interest. Each building was worked on as a separate stage to ensure the public was able to enjoy the other building and areas while watching the restoration process.

CAPE are very proud of being part of the team to upgrade such an iconic facility for future generations.
